Drivers in Iredell County should plan for a weekend closure of an Interstate 77 on-ramp as part of ongoing roadway improvements, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.
Contract crews from Maymead Inc. of Mountain City, Tennessee, will close the I-77 South on-ramp from South Main Street (U.S. 21) beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, May 29. The closure will remain in place through Sunday, May 31, weather permitting, with the ramp expected to reopen by noon.
During the closure, crews will mill the existing roadway surface, install a pavement interlayer fabric, and place new asphalt to improve driving conditions for motorists entering the interstate..
A signed detour will direct drivers from South Main Street to I-77 North, then to Exit 45 (Amity Hill Road), where motorists can rejoin I-77 South.
Officials encourage drivers to use caution in the area, obey posted speed limits, and allow extra travel time while navigating the detour.
The work is part of a $21.4 million contract to rehabilitate approximately 12 miles of I-77 in Iredell County, stretching from Exit 36 (N.C. 150) to Exit 49 (U.S. 70/Salisbury Road). The overall project is scheduled for completion this fall.
