Mandatory water restrictions are now in effect across Iredell County as officials respond to worsening drought conditions in the region.

Iredell Water Corporation, the Statesville, and the Troutman have all implemented mandatory conservation measures after the North Carolina Drought Management Advisory Council classified the county as being in an “extreme drought.”

Under the restrictions, customers are prohibited from washing vehicles at home, operating ornamental fountains or ponds without fish, filling swimming pools, and washing driveways, sidewalks, or patios.

Outdoor lawn irrigation has also been limited to one night per week. Customers with odd-numbered addresses may water on Saturdays from 8 p.m. until Sunday at 8 a.m. Customers with even-numbered addresses may water on Sundays from 8 p.m. until Monday at 8 a.m.

Officials say the restrictions are intended to reduce overall water usage by 10 percent in order to maintain adequate water pressure throughout the system for daily service and fire protection.

Water customers are also being encouraged to take additional conservation steps, including taking shorter showers, repairing leaks quickly, and avoiding unnecessary water use inside the home.

Officials warn that if water consumption does not decrease, stricter restrictions could be necessary in the coming weeks as drought conditions continue across the area.
