The Statesville Fire Department is celebrating 150 years of service to the community with a special anniversary event honoring the department’s long history of protecting lives and property.
City officials say the department’s roots trace back to the late 1800s after devastating downtown fires led to the formation of early volunteer fire companies. Over the years, the department has grown into a modern emergency response agency serving the City of Statesville with four fire stations, multiple engine companies, and more than 70 firefighters.
The City of Statesville will host a free community celebration on Saturday, May 16, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Fire Station 1 on Fifth Street. The event will feature firefighter demonstrations, fire engine displays, safety education activities, children’s attractions, and historical exhibits highlighting the department’s evolution over the past century and a half.
Fire Chief Glenn Kurfees recently reflected on the department’s legacy, emphasizing the professionalism, training, and dedication of firefighters who continue serving the community every day. City officials say the anniversary celebration is intended not only to honor the department’s history, but also recognize the firefighters and staff who continue carrying on that tradition of service.
Organizers say attendees will also be able to participate in hands-on fire safety demonstrations, firefighter muster competitions, turnout gear races, and family activities throughout the event. Lunch will be provided, and commemorative challenge coins and free ice cream will be distributed while supplies last.
