Deputies with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Statesville man following a domestic assault investigation Sunday, May 24.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a reported domestic assault at a residence on Cline Street in Statesville. When deputies arrived, they made contact with the victim, who reportedly showed visible signs of injury consistent with an assault.
During the investigation, deputies learned that the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Sam Michael Costa of Statesville, remained inside the residence and refused to come outside. Deputies secured the area while emergency personnel responded to assist the victim.
Iredell County EMS evaluated the victim at the scene before transporting her to a local hospital for further treatment.
Investigators said Deputy Paul obtained warrants charging Costa with Misdemeanor Assault on a Female, Misdemeanor Crime of Domestic Violence, and Misdemeanor Resisting, Delaying, and Obstructing a Public Officer.
After the warrants were issued, deputies entered the residence and located Costa hiding inside a bedroom closet underneath a pile of clothing. Authorities said Costa resisted deputies’ attempts to take him into custody but was eventually arrested without further incident.
