A black bear has been spotted in the Martin Luther King Jr. Park area in Statesville, prompting a response from the Statesville Police Department, which says it is actively monitoring the situation.
Officials note that while seeing a bear within city limits may be surprising, black bears are common throughout North Carolina and occasionally wander into developed neighborhoods as they search for food or new territory. At this time, the bear has not displayed any aggressive behavior and appears to be moving through the area normally.
Authorities are reminding residents to remain alert but calm and to avoid any interaction with the animal.
Residents who spot the bear are strongly encouraged to:
Keep a safe distance
Do not approach, feed, or attempt to interact with it
Keep children and pets away
Allow the bear to move on naturally
Avoid taking close-up photos or selfies
If the bear shows aggressive behavior or creates an immediate threat to public safety, residents should call 911.
Officials thank the community for helping ensure both public safety and the wellbeing of local wildlife.
