Emergency crews in Troutman are reminding drivers to follow traffic control measures after a concerning incident at a crash scene.

According to responders, units including Rescue 1, Engine 1, Iredell County Emergency Medical Services, and the Troutman Police Department were dispatched to a vehicle accident at the intersection of South Main Street and Ostwalt Amity Road.

While crews worked the scene, Rescue 1 was positioned near Houston Road to help redirect traffic. Fire personnel deployed high-visibility cones and used emergency vehicles with lights activated to block the roadway and guide drivers safely around the incident.

However, officials say some drivers ignored those safety measures, driving around the apparatus and over traffic cones in an attempt to pass through the scene.

Emergency responders stress that road closures are put in place to protect both the public and those working the incident. Bypassing those barriers is dangerous and can put lives at risk.

So far this year, 36 first responders across fire, EMS, law enforcement, and roadside services have been killed in incidents involving drivers failing to obey traffic laws.

Crews say that despite one vehicle making it past the cones and apparatus, it ultimately remained stuck in the same traffic due to the number of emergency units still on scene.

Officials are urging drivers to respect all road closures, remain patient, and use alternate routes when emergency crews are working.
