Newton, N.C. – Authorities are investigating a suspected explosion that led to a devastating house fire in Catawba County, leaving two people injured—one of them seriously.

Emergency crews from multiple fire departments, along with Catawba County EMS, responded Wednesday (April 1, 2026) to a reported explosion at a home in the 4000 block of Shook Road. When first responders arrived, they found the residence engulfed in flames.

Two occupants of the home were hurt in the incident. Officials say one of the victims suffered severe injuries.

Due to the nature of the call, the Catawba County Fire Marshal requested assistance from the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office to begin a criminal investigation. Investigators have since received information suggesting there may have been explosive materials inside the home.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has been called in to assist. SBI agents are currently on scene working alongside sheriff’s investigators and the Fire Marshal’s Office.

Authorities say a thorough search is now underway to determine whether explosive materials played a role in the incident.

Officials add that more information will be released as the investigation continues.
