The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is once again helping vulnerable residents stay cool this summer through its annual Operation Fan Heat Relief program.

The initiative, led by NCDHHS’ Division of Aging in partnership with local agencies, will run May 1 through October 31, 2026, providing fans to eligible residents across the state.

Adults 60 and older and individuals with disabilities can apply for assistance through their local aging agencies. The program aims to reduce the risk of heat-related illness by improving access to cooling resources during the hottest months of the year.

Since launching in 1986, Operation Fan Heat Relief has helped thousands of North Carolinians. In 2025 alone, donations totaling $85,000 funded the distribution of more than 3,600 fans and 23 air conditioners across 93 counties.

State officials say the program is especially important for older adults and those with chronic health conditions, who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat.

“Protecting the health and safety of our aging community remains a priority,” said Michael Leighs. “This program helps ensure North Carolinians stay safe, comfortable, and healthy during the summer months.”

Health officials recommend seniors take precautions during hot weather, including: staying hydrated, spending time in air-conditioned spaces, avoiding strenuous afternoon activity, and consulting a physician about medications that may affect the body’s ability to regulate temperature.

The program is supported through donations from Duke Energy Carolinas, Duke Energy Progress, and Dominion Energy.

For more information or to apply, residents can contact their local area agency on aging or call NCDHHS at 919-855-3400.
