The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles has introduced a new online feature aimed at making visits to driver license offices more efficient.

The tool, now available on the NCDMV Office Locations page, provides real-time wait times and capacity updates for offices across North Carolina. Drivers can check estimated wait times before leaving home, along with status indicators showing whether an office is accepting walk-ins and appointments, experiencing longer waits, or has reached capacity.

Josh Stein said the feature is designed to improve convenience for residents. He noted that whether someone is renewing a license or applying for a new ID, the goal is to help people complete their visit more quickly and get on with their day.

Wait times are shown as a range and are based on real-time data, including how many service stations are open, how many customers are currently being served or waiting, and the average time required for each service. Officials say the estimates begin once a customer checks in and receives a ticket number, and are intentionally conservative to better manage expectations.

NCDMV Commissioner Paul Tine called the new system a major step forward in customer service, giving people the ability to plan ahead, avoid unnecessary travel, and choose less busy times or alternative locations.

The agency also emphasized that customers no longer need to arrive hours before offices open. Walk-ins are accepted throughout the day until capacity is reached, and many locations are seeing shorter wait times in the afternoon.

Officials say the new feature is intended to reduce frustration by helping drivers avoid long, unexpected waits and better plan their visits.
