IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — New details have been released regarding the search for a missing child in Iredell County after the child was safely located.
Speaking on the WAME Morning Show, Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell shared information about how Gideon Ferguson was found following an extensive search effort.
According to the sheriff, Gideon was located sitting on a log in a wooded area not far from a nearby residence. Investigators believe he did not want to be found and had left — then later returned — to the search area during the time he was missing.
Sheriff Campbell said investigators believe vehicles were involved in Gideon’s movements both leaving and re-entering the area. K-9 teams were used to reverse-track Gideon’s path, helping deputies confirm those movements.
The sheriff also praised Gideon’s family for their cooperation throughout the investigation, noting their assistance was critical to the search effort.
Sheriff Campbell expressed gratitude to the community for its overwhelming support, thanking residents who shared information, provided meals and resources for search teams, and helped spread awareness through social media.
According to the sheriff, Gideon told investigators he left after having a bad day and intentionally left his phone at home.
Sheriff Campbell said he is thankful the search ended safely. The investigation remains ongoing.
