NEWTON, N.C. — Newton Police are continuing to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred yesterday, leading to multiple felony charges and active warrants for the suspect.
According to the Newton Police Department, officers were dispatched shortly before noon on February 2 to the Sandalwood Apartments on Sandalwood Court after receiving a 911 call about a possible trespassing incident. The caller reportedly knew the suspect and told police he was armed with a gun.
Officers searched the apartment but did not locate the suspect. Police were later informed that the man had fled and was hiding inside a shed behind the apartment complex. While officers were checking the area, a man exited one of the sheds and ran toward them. During that encounter, one officer discharged their firearm, striking the man in the leg.
The suspect was immediately detained, and officers began life-saving measures until EMS arrived. He was transported to a local hospital and later transferred to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. Police say no officers or bystanders were injured, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
Authorities have since identified the suspect as 19-year-old Ahmon Jamir Henderson of Salisbury. Warrants have been issued charging Henderson with two felony counts of second-degree burglary, one felony count of possession of a stolen firearm, and one misdemeanor count of resisting a public officer. He is also wanted on outstanding Mecklenburg County warrants that include charges of breaking or entering with intent to terrorize and assault by strangulation.
Police say they were not notified prior to Henderson’s release from Baptist Hospital. He is currently considered armed and dangerous, and anyone who sees him or knows his whereabouts is urged to call 911.
The officer who discharged their weapon has been placed on administrative leave, in accordance with department policy. The incident remains under investigation by the Newton Police Department and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
No additional information is being released at this time. Anyone with information related to the case is encouraged to contact the Newton Police Department at 828-465-7430.
