“Operation Firecracker Booze It & Lose It” Launches Across North Carolina

As the Fourth of July holiday approaches, state officials are reminding drivers that it remains one of the deadliest times of the year on North Carolina roadways.

The N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP) has launched its annual “Operation Firecracker Booze It & Lose It” campaign, a statewide effort focused on reducing impaired driving through increased law enforcement patrols, sobriety checkpoints, and public awareness messaging.

The campaign will run throughout the holiday period, with officers across North Carolina increasing enforcement efforts before, during, and after Independence Day.

“We want everyone to enjoy the holiday and celebrate, but getting behind the wheel after drinking is never worth the risk,” said GHSP Director Mark Ezzell. “Last year, 11,782 crashes were reported statewide involving drivers who were under the influence of alcohol. This is unacceptable.”

According to the N.C. Department of Transportation, there were 176 alcohol-related crashes and five fatalities during the Fourth of July holiday period in 2024.

Officials say the campaign is intended to serve as a reminder of the serious consequences of impaired driving and to encourage safer choices during holiday celebrations.

“Celebrating the Fourth of July responsibly could not be simpler,” said Emerald Isle Police Chief Michael Panzarella. “What’s not simple are the impacts of someone choosing to drink and then drive.”

Law enforcement officials encourage residents to plan ahead by using designated sober drivers, rideshare services, or taxis when needed.
