Iredell-Statesville Schools Board of Education Chairman Kevin Angell has resigned from the board following an altercation with fellow board member Mike Kubiniec after the board’s January 12 meeting had adjourned.

Angell did not participate in Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting. At the conclusion of that meeting, Superintendent Jeff James read Angell’s resignation letter aloud to board members.

In the letter, Angell stated, “After careful thought and reflection, I am writing to formally resign from my position as a member of the Iredell-Statesville Board of Education, effective immediately.”

Vice Chair Doug Knight presided over Monday’s meeting in Angell’s absence. During the session, Knight addressed the situation, saying Angell “is taking responsibility for his actions.”

With Angell’s resignation, the board will move forward with leadership changes. Members are expected to elect a new chair at their next meeting and will also begin the process of appointing a new District 2 representative to fill the vacant seat.

No further details regarding the altercation were discussed during Monday’s meeting.
