Travelers flying out of Charlotte could face longer security lines and potential delays as the effects of the partial government shutdown ripple through the airline industry.

Officials at Charlotte Douglas International Airport say staffing levels with the Transportation Security Administration may affect security wait times in the coming days.

In a statement to travelers, airport officials encouraged passengers to arrive early and allow extra time to get through security screening.

Charlotte Douglas is one of the busiest airports in the world, ranking sixth globally in aircraft operations and seventh in North America for passenger traffic. The airport relies on about 100 air traffic controllers in operational, coordination, and administrative roles, along with thousands of other workers. In total, more than 20,000 people work at the airport across a variety of jobs.

Airport officials also thanked TSA agents and other federal partners for their continued dedication to keeping travelers safe during the shutdown.

Despite the concerns, recent data shows delays trending downward this week. According to the flight tracking platform FlightAware, Charlotte Douglas recorded 471 delays Sunday, 249 Monday, 154 Tuesday, and 86 through noon Wednesday. Cancellations at the airport were also lower, with 26 Sunday, seven Monday, six Tuesday, and three through noon Wednesday.

At Raleigh-Durham International Airport, delays have also decreased, dropping from 131 Sunday to 30 through noon Wednesday. Cancellations there ranged from eight Sunday to four through noon Wednesday.

Officials say travelers should still plan ahead as the shutdown continues.
