STATESVILLE — A shooting at a Statesville hotel early Tuesday morning left one man seriously injured and later led to a standoff and the death of a suspect in Burke County, according to police.
The Statesville Police Department says officers responded around 2:00 a.m. on February 3, 2026, to a report of a shooting at the Microtel Inn on Landson Drive. When officers arrived, they found an adult male inside the hotel lobby suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the face and abdomen.
Officers immediately provided medical aid until Iredell County Emergency Medical Services arrived. The victim was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for treatment. Police have not released an update on the victim’s condition.
During the investigation, detectives identified Joel Scott Wimbush Jr. as the suspect. Investigators determined the shooting followed an altercation in a nearby parking lot. Based on the evidence collected, warrants were obtained charging Wimbush with attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Because Wimbush was not a Statesville resident, the department requested assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force to locate him.
On February 5, 2026, the task force, along with the Burke County Sheriff's Office, located Wimbush at a residence in Hildebran. Police say when officers attempted to take him into custody, he barricaded himself inside the residence and refused commands.
After a standoff lasting several hours, officers entered the home and found Wimbush suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
