IREDELL COUNTY, NC — An Iredell County man has been arrested following an investigation into child exploitation that began with a tip from a national watchdog organization.

According to Sheriff Darren Campbell, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office received a CyberTip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) on January 10, 2026. The tip indicated that a suspect in the county may have been in possession of child pornography.

The case was assigned to Detective E. Lane with the Sheriff’s Office Special Victim’s Unit. Through the investigation, Detective Lane identified the suspect as 38-year-old Matthew Scott Sells of Statesville.

Authorities obtained search warrants for the suspect’s online email accounts, which led to the discovery of multiple files containing child pornography. Investigators say Sells later confessed to the crimes during an interview.

Additional search warrants were executed for electronic devices belonging to Sells. A forensic analysis of those devices revealed thousands more digital files of child pornography.

Based on the evidence collected—including the CyberTip, suspect interview, and forensic findings—Detective Lane secured arrest warrants charging Sells with 10 counts of Second-Degree Sexual Exploitation of a Minor.

Sells was arrested on Sunday, March 22, 2026, and taken to the Iredell County Detention Center. He was issued a $250,000 secured bond by Magistrate Russell.

The investigation remains ongoing, and officials say additional charges are possible.
