Two four-legged officers with the Troutman Police Department are getting an added layer of protection on the job.
K9s Luka and Scar will soon receive bullet- and stab-resistant vests, thanks to a charitable donation from the nonprofit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. The vests are being provided through the Survival Armor incentive program and will be embroidered with the message, “Gifted by Vested Interest in K9s and Survival Armor.” Delivery is expected within the next ten weeks.
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2009, works to equip law enforcement dogs across the country with protective gear and resources. The vests are made in the United States, custom-fitted for each K9, and certified by the National Institute of Justice.
Since its founding, the organization has provided more than 6,300 protective vests to K9 units nationwide, representing an investment of nearly $7 million. These efforts are funded entirely through private and corporate donations.
To qualify for the program, K9s must be at least 20 months old, actively serving with law enforcement or related agencies, and properly certified. Dogs with expired vests are also eligible. Nationwide, there are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s serving alongside officers.
Each vest has an estimated value of $1,800, weighs between 4 and 5 pounds, and includes a five-year warranty. Individual donors can sponsor a vest with a contribution of $1,050.
The donation ensures K9s Luka and Scar will continue to serve the Troutman community with an extra level of safety as they assist officers in the field.
