A 24-year-old Alabama woman was killed early Saturday morning after a crash on Interstate 77 in Iredell County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers say the victim, Kylah D. Wheeler of Fultondale, Alabama, had exited her vehicle after it became disabled in the northbound lanes of Interstate 77 near the 34-mile marker around 4:00 a.m. on March 7.
Investigators say Wheeler’s black 2022 Honda Accord was stopped in the right lane of the interstate with no lights on. A northbound 2004 Ford Explorer then struck the disabled vehicle.
The impact caused the Honda to strike Wheeler, who was standing outside the vehicle at the time.
Wheeler died at the scene from her injuries. The driver of the Ford Explorer was not injured.
According to the State Highway Patrol, the initial investigation determined that neither speed nor impairment were factors in the crash. Troopers say Wheeler had improperly parked the vehicle in the roadway without lights activated.
No charges will be filed in the case.
Northbound lanes of I-77 were partially closed for several hours while troopers conducted the on-scene investigation.
