HICKORY, N.C. — A tense standoff unfolded Monday afternoon after a reckless driving stop escalated into an armed confrontation, prompting a multi-agency response and temporary road closure in Hickory.

According to the Catawba County Sheriff's Office, a deputy attempted a traffic stop on February 16 along Springs Road when the driver, identified as Jose Guadalupe Orozco Lemus, allegedly brandished a firearm and told the deputy he wanted to be shot.

The incident occurred in the parking lot of a business near St. Stephens Fire Station 1, quickly drawing a heavy law enforcement presence. Deputies established a perimeter as the Sheriff’s Office Special Tactics and Response (STAR) Team and Crisis Intervention and De-escalation Teams responded to the scene.

Troopers with the North Carolina Highway Patrol and officers from the Hickory Police Department assisted, blocking portions of Springs Road to protect the public while negotiators attempted to communicate with Lemus. An investigator fluent in Spanish also worked to de-escalate the situation, but those efforts were unsuccessful.

Authorities then deployed two armored vehicles to pin Lemus’s car in place, preventing him from fleeing. Deputies used less-lethal munitions to pressure him to exit the vehicle. Minutes later, Lemus surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.

He was transported to an area hospital for a mental health evaluation. Criminal charges are pending.
