Gas Prices Surge Across Iredell County

Drivers across Iredell County are feeling the impact of rising fuel costs, with gas prices climbing sharply over the past 10 days as tensions and military conflict involving Iran continue to shake global energy markets.
Local stations that were selling regular gasoline for around $2.80 to $2.90 per gallon in early March are now commonly posting prices between roughly $3.15 and $3.30 per gallon, an increase of about 25 to 40 cents in just over a week. Similar spikes have been seen across the Carolinas and nationwide.
Energy analysts say the rapid rise is being driven largely by instability in the Middle East and fears that global oil supplies could be disrupted. Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil routes, has been threatened during the conflict, and the region normally handles about 20 percent of global oil shipments.
The uncertainty has pushed crude oil prices sharply higher. Brent crude briefly surged to around $119 per barrel during the height of the crisis earlier this week before retreating somewhat.
As of March 11, global oil prices have eased slightly to about $88 per barrel, after international leaders discussed releasing strategic oil reserves to stabilize markets.
Even with the slight drop in crude prices, experts say drivers may continue seeing higher prices at the pump in the coming weeks because gasoline prices typically lag behind swings in the oil market.
Since the conflict began, gas prices in the United States have already jumped significantly, with some reports showing increases of around 17 percent in just over a week.
Energy analysts warn that if the conflict widens or if oil shipments from the Middle East are further disrupted, fuel prices could climb even higher nationwide.
For now, motorists in Iredell County are likely to continue seeing fluctuations at local pumps as global oil markets react to ongoing developments overseas.
