Five individuals were taken into custody late Tuesday night after an attempted drug sale in Mocksville led deputies to a stolen vehicle and a large quantity of marijuana, according to the Davie County Sheriff’s Office.

On February 3, 2026, at approximately 11:00 p.m., deputies responded to reports from employees at Sheetz, located at 1449 Yadkinville Road, and 601 Tobacco and Vape at 1423 Yadkinville Road. Employees reported several males approaching customers and attempting to sell narcotics in the parking areas of the businesses.

Deputies located individuals matching the descriptions as they attempted to leave the 601 Tobacco and Vape parking lot in a gray Honda Accord. The vehicle attempted to evade law enforcement but was quickly blocked in by deputies.

A probable cause search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of approximately two pounds of marijuana. A database check later revealed the Honda Accord had been reported stolen out of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Through coordination with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, investigators learned all five occupants of the vehicle are alleged to have stolen the car earlier that day after assaulting the owner and taking his keys and shoes.

During the investigation, a separate victim reported that one of the suspects, Dezyan Markee Newkirk, falsely claimed ownership of a cell phone the victim had accidentally left at one of the stores. Newkirk allegedly wiped the phone and attempted to sell it to customers at both businesses.

The following charges were filed:

  • Brandon Christopher Bruce, 23, of Shelly Avenue in Charlotte, was charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver marijuana and felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle. No bond was issued. He is scheduled to appear in Davie County District Court on February 19, 2026.

  • Benjamin Jordan Kennedy, 23, of Spanish Moss Lane in Charlotte, was charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver marijuana and felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle. He received a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on February 19, 2026.

  • Dezyan Markee Newkirk, 23, of Amberjack Road in Fayetteville, was charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver marijuana, felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and felony obtaining property by false pretenses. He received a $13,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on February 19, 2026.

  • Miracle Renee Shrewsbury, 18, of Poole Road in Salisbury, was charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver marijuana and felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle. She received a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on February 19, 2026.

The fifth suspect is a juvenile and will be handled through the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, Juvenile Justice division.

Authorities say additional charges related to the alleged robbery and vehicle theft are expected to be filed by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
