Mount Airy, NC — Authorities are investigating a deadly shooting that left two teenagers dead and two others injured Wednesday afternoon in the Mount Airy area of Surry County.

On January 29, 2026, at approximately 2:06 p.m., the Surry County Sheriff’s Office, along with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, responded to a report of a shooting on Samurai Lane, off Welcome Baptist Church Road. Multiple agencies assisted in the response, including Surry County EMS, Surry County 911 Communications, the Mount Airy Police Department, the Bannertown and Four Way Volunteer Fire Departments, and the Winston-Salem Police Department, which helped locate one suspect within its jurisdiction.

When deputies arrived on scene, they found four individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Law enforcement officers and emergency responders immediately began rendering medical aid. One victim, an 18-year-old male, was pronounced dead at the scene. Three additional victims were transported to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. A second victim, a 17-year-old male, later died as a result of his injuries.

Officials report that an 18-year-old male victim is currently listed in stable condition, while a 17-year-old male victim remains in critical condition.

Investigators worked throughout the night and have made multiple arrests in connection with the incident. Four individuals have been taken into custody, including two juveniles under the age of 18 and two adults over the age of 18. Due to the ongoing investigation, authorities are not releasing any names at this time.

According to the Surry County Sheriff’s Office, each of the four suspects faces the same charges: two counts of felony first-degree murder, one count of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, and one count of conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.

The juvenile suspects are being processed and held by the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice. The adult suspects are being held at the Surry County Detention Center without bond. Investigators note that this remains an active investigation and that additional charges may be forthcoming.

Sheriff Steve C. Hiatt expressed gratitude to the agencies and organizations that assisted during the response, including the North Carolina Department of Transportation for help with roadway closures and Welcome Baptist Church for allowing the use of its facilities.

“This incident is unthinkable,” Sheriff Hiatt said in a statement. “I ask our community to continue to pray for and keep the families of all those involved in your thoughts and prayers, as well as our responders and investigators. I am extremely proud of the dedicated work of our team and the strong working relationships we have with our partnering agencies.”

Authorities say further updates will be released as more information becomes available.
