Drivers in Iredell County are seeing some relief at the pump as gasoline prices continue to trend downward heading into the summer travel season.

According to the latest data from the American Automobile Association (AAA), North Carolina's average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline stood at $3.95 on June 1, down from $4.17 a week earlier and significantly below prices seen during the Memorial Day travel period just weeks ago.

The Charlotte metropolitan area, which includes Iredell County, reported an average price of $3.97 per gallon, slightly above the statewide average but lower than many areas of the Southeast.

The recent decline comes after a spring surge that pushed North Carolina gas prices above $4.20 per gallon in late May. AAA reported that Memorial Day weekend fuel prices reached some of their highest levels in four years before beginning to retreat as oil markets stabilized and fuel supplies improved.

AAA analysts noted last week that gasoline prices have been falling nationally, providing some relief for motorists as families begin summer vacations and road trips.

While prices have eased in recent days, drivers are still paying substantially more than they were a year ago. North Carolina's statewide average currently sits more than $1 per gallon higher than the same time last year, reflecting continued pressure from global energy markets and refining costs.

Local gas stations throughout Statesville, Mooresville, Troutman, and the rest of Iredell County have generally followed statewide trends, with prices varying depending on location, competition, and proximity to major highways.

Industry analysts say prices could continue to fluctuate throughout the summer as demand increases during peak vacation travel months. However, for now, Iredell County drivers are benefiting from a noticeable drop in fuel costs compared to just a few weeks ago
