The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season officially began today, and Governor Josh Stein is encouraging North Carolinians to take steps now to prepare for potential tropical weather impacts in the months ahead.
While forecasters at the National Hurricane Center are predicting a below-normal hurricane season, state officials emphasize that it only takes one storm to cause significant damage and disruption across North Carolina.
“Hurricane season brings real uncertainty for families across the state. I encourage all North Carolinians to make a plan now to keep themselves and their families safe in case of a storm,” Governor Stein said in a statement.
The governor noted that while residents are encouraged to prepare their homes and families, state emergency officials have also been actively preparing for the season. Emergency management personnel have been monitoring forecasts, updating response plans, and coordinating with federal, state, and local partners to ensure readiness.
The State Emergency Response Team has spent the past several months reviewing lessons learned from previous storms, updating procedures, coordinating with government agencies and community partners, and conducting training exercises. One of the largest preparedness efforts was the Statewide Hurricane Exercise held May 20-21, which simulated hurricane response operations across North Carolina.
North Carolina Emergency Management Director Will Ray stressed the importance of preparing before a storm threatens the state.
“Preparation is the key to resilience during hurricane season,” Ray said. “We encourage all North Carolinians to take time to develop plans and take proactive steps with their loved ones before a storm impacts our state.”
Officials recommend residents create evacuation plans, assemble emergency supply kits, secure important documents in waterproof containers, and review insurance policies to ensure adequate coverage. State leaders also encourage homeowners to understand the difference between standard homeowners insurance and flood insurance, as flood damage is often not covered under traditional policies.
Emergency management officials say the State Emergency Response Team remains prepared to respond if tropical weather impacts North Carolina this season and will continue training and improving response capabilities throughout the year.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. State officials encourage residents to stay informed, monitor weather forecasts, and prepare now rather than waiting until a storm is approaching.
