IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Schools across Iredell County remain closed as the area continues efforts to reopen and recover following this week’s ice storm, while forecasters are also monitoring the potential for another round of winter weather this weekend.

The Iredell-Statesville School District has kept schools closed due to lingering icy conditions on roads, sidewalks, and school campuses. Officials say while progress is being made, untreated secondary roads and neighborhood streets remain slick, particularly during early morning and overnight hours when temperatures drop and refreezing occurs.

City and county crews across Iredell County continue cleanup efforts and road treatment, but officials urge drivers to use caution and limit travel when possible as conditions slowly improve.

Looking Ahead: Weekend Weather

Forecasters say another winter system could impact the region this weekend, bringing the possibility of snow, sleet, or freezing rain. While confidence in exact totals remains low, early projections suggest light accumulations may be possible, especially during the overnight and morning hours.

Some forecast models indicate the potential for a dusting up to a couple of inches of snow, while others suggest light ice accumulation could develop if temperatures remain below freezing. Even small amounts could create hazardous travel conditions given the cold ground temperatures left behind by the recent storm.

Temperatures are expected to remain cold through the weekend, with daytime highs staying in the 30s and overnight lows falling into the teens and low 20s, increasing the likelihood of refreezing.

Officials encourage residents to stay informed, monitor local updates, check on neighbors, protect pets, and continue preparing for prolonged winter conditions as recovery efforts continue.
