Mass Shooting in Surry County Leaves Two Dead, Two Injured

Four people were shot Thursday afternoon in Mount Airy, North Carolina, in a mass shooting that claimed two lives and left two others wounded, according to law enforcement officials.
The incident occurred shortly after 2:00 p.m. on January 29, 2026, when the Surry County Sheriff’s Office and emergency responders were dispatched to a residential area near Welcome Baptist Church Road and Samurai Lane, on the east side of Mount Airy.
Victims and Immediate Response
Deputies arriving on the scene discovered four individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second victim later died at a hospital. The other two victims were transported for medical treatment, and their conditions have not been publicly updated.
Law enforcement agencies, including the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), the Surry County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), are actively investigating the shooting. Officials said there is no ongoing threat to the public at this time.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have not yet released details on a suspect or suspects, possible motive, or whether anyone has been detained. SBI agents were on scene collecting evidence and conducting interviews as part of the ongoing inquiry. Road closures remained in place for much of the evening as investigators worked to process the area.
Officials also indicated they are seeking additional individuals believed to be involved, though they reiterated that residents are not believed to be in immediate danger.
Community Reaction and Church Statement
The shooting took place across the street from Welcome Baptist Church, whose leaders confirmed that no members of the congregation were involved in the incident and that churchgoers were safe. In a social media statement, church representatives asked the community to pray for the victims and first responders.
Residents in the area reported a significant law enforcement presence following the shooting, with police securing the scene and urging motorists to avoid the vicinity while the investigation continues.
