On January 4, 2026, the Mooresville Police Department responded to a reported armed robbery at the Dollar Tree located at 221-R Norman Station Blvd.
According to police, responding officers reviewed surveillance video from inside the store that showed a male suspect entering the business, approaching employees, and displaying a handgun. The suspect demanded money from the safe located in the store’s office. After obtaining the cash, the suspect took the store’s phone and fled the scene.
Investigators later learned that several armed robberies had occurred at Dollar Tree locations in other jurisdictions during the week leading up to the Mooresville incident. Detectives determined the suspect vehicle was a dark-colored Honda sedan. Further investigation led authorities to identify a suspect connected to those crimes.
Warrants were issued for David Daniel Hunter, 62, of China Grove, North Carolina. On January 7, 2026, Hunter was located and arrested without incident in Bristol, Virginia, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service. He was denied bond pending extradition and is currently being held at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority in Abingdon, Virginia.
Hunter has been charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon. Police say additional charges are expected from the Mooresville Police Department and surrounding jurisdictions.
The Mooresville Police Department thanked the U.S. Marshals Service and the Bristol, Virginia Police Department for their assistance in apprehending the suspect.
