RALEIGH, N.C. — Beginning Monday, February 9, 2026, 90 North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) driver license offices will end their 7 a.m. early morning openings and return to the standard 8 a.m. start time. The change comes after federal funding that supported the earlier hours was exhausted.
Most affected offices will now operate from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Customers are encouraged to check the NCDMV office locations page online for the latest hours, as some rural offices have recently expanded their schedules.
Key Changes to NCDMV Hours:
7 a.m. Opening Ends: Offices that previously opened at 7 a.m. will now begin service at 8 a.m.
Rural Office Expansions: Four rural offices in Yanceyville, Pembroke, Spruce Pine, and Newland have recently increased hours, with some moving to five-day-a-week operations.
Appointments & Walk-ins: Appointments can be scheduled up to seven days in advance, but all offices also accept walk-in customers throughout the day.
Road Tests: Road tests are not offered after 4 p.m. at any location.
NCDMV officials emphasize the importance of checking specific office hours before visiting, as schedules may vary between locations. These changes aim to balance customer needs while managing staffing and funding limitations.
