Statesville, NC — Iredell County schools shifted to remote learning Thursday after overnight snow and plummeting temperatures made travel conditions hazardous for students and staff.
On Wednesday evening, the Iredell-Statesville School District, American Renaissance School, and Mooresville Graded School District indicated that classes would proceed in person. However, as fresh snowfall accumulated overnight and temperatures stayed below freezing, district officials reversed course and announced a remote learning day to ensure student safety.
The decision followed reports of snow covering roadways and lingering icy spots that made bus routes and neighborhood streets unsafe for morning travel. The district activated its inclement weather procedures, choosing to keep students at home and continue instructional activities online rather than bring students into school buildings.
Under the remote learning plan, students are expected to log into their digital classrooms and complete assignments from home, a practice districts across North Carolina have adopted in recent winter weather events to maintain learning continuity despite closures. Remote days count toward instructional hours and help prevent extending the school year to make up time lost to inclement weather.
Parents and families were notified of the change early Thursday via the district’s communication channels, which include email alerts, social media updates, and local media. The district reminded families that health and safety remain the top priorities when making weather-related scheduling decisions.
Snow and cold weather have affected much of central and western North Carolina in recent weeks, prompting remote learning or delays in multiple counties. School systems tailor their responses to current conditions, with many opting for remote instruction when snowfall or ice could compromise student safety.
District officials said they will continue to monitor weather conditions throughout the day and will communicate any further changes to schedules for the coming days as needed. Families are encouraged to stay tuned to official channels for the latest updates.
