MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Political pressure continues to build on Mooresville Mayor Chris Carney following months of controversy surrounding a late-night incident at Town Hall that has drawn regional and national attention.
The latest development came after the Mooresville Board of Commissioners voted in April to formally express “no confidence” in Carney and publicly call for his resignation. The controversy centers around surveillance footage reportedly showing Carney inside Town Hall after hours in October 2024 with a woman while partially undressed.
During a recent Board of Commissioners meeting, Carney suggested for the first time that he may not complete his current term, which is scheduled to run through 2027. According to reports, Carney told commissioners that once the town’s upcoming budget process is completed, discussions would begin regarding “what the future looks like.”
The controversy has continued to gain widespread media attention, including coverage from major regional outlets and national publications.
In addition to the political fallout, several former town employees have filed lawsuits alleging retaliation tied to the handling and preservation of the surveillance footage. One lawsuit alleges the video showed Carney without pants for an extended period inside Town Hall.
Carney has denied wrongdoing and previously stated that he became ill after mixing alcohol and medication. He has said he removed his pants after vomiting on them while inside the building.
Despite calls for his resignation and increasing scrutiny from both the public and town leaders, Carney has not officially stepped down and continues to serve as mayor of Mooresville.
