Officials warn that additional fake accounts may also be used.
The City advises that all official communications will come from email addresses ending in @statesvillenc.net.
Businesses are urged not to click on any suspicious links, not to submit payment, and to report the emails as phishing attempts.
City leaders encourage the community to share the warning to help protect local businesses from falling victim to the scam.
