The City of Statesville is partnering with the Boys & Girls Club of the Piedmont to expand recreation access and strengthen youth services in a growing part of the community. City Council approved the $3.25 million purchase of the Cochran Street facility during its March 16 meeting, with financing over 10 years at zero percent interest.
As part of the agreement, youth programming will continue without interruption. Approximately 150 students will keep receiving after-school and summer services at the Bentley Community Center, which the city will lease to the Boys & Girls Club for $1 per year in five-year terms.
City leaders say the move addresses a major need, as an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 homes are planned or under development nearby—an area that currently lacks a dedicated recreation center. The Cochran Street facility will be converted into a full-service, city-operated recreation center to better serve residents on the west and south sides of Statesville.
The partnership also allows the Boys & Girls Club to focus resources on its core mission of youth development, mentorship, and academic support, following recent reductions in federal funding.
City officials say the agreement ensures continuity for families while expanding recreational opportunities and planning for future growth.
