Statesville officials say enforcement of water restrictions will begin May 4 as the city remains under a Stage D3 Extreme Drought.
The impacts of a D3 Extreme Drought can create major risks for agriculture and wildlife, including crop losses, sharply lower water levels in reservoirs, lakes, and streams, and severe stress on vegetation throughout the area.
Under the mandatory restrictions, several activities will be prohibited, including all residential vehicle washing, outdoor ornamental water use such as fountains and ponds without fish, and filling swimming pools, although topping off existing pools will still be allowed.
Washing public buildings, sidewalks, and streets will also be prohibited unless necessary for safety or public health. Dust suppression, street washing, and hydrant flushing will only be allowed when required to maintain safety, water quality, or regulatory compliance.
Under the enforcement plan, fines for violations will start at $200 for a first offense. A second violation will carry a $400 penalty, while each additional violation will result in a $600 fine.
City officials are urging residents and businesses to reduce all non-essential water use and shift any necessary outdoor water use to the early morning or late evening hours to help protect the city’s water supply.
