Stony Point Woman Dies in Early Morning House Fire

Stony Point, NC – A 64-year-old woman died Thursday morning following a residential structure fire in eastern Alexander County.


According to authorities, on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at approximately 7:51 a.m., the Alexander County 911 Communications Center received a report of a house fire with possible entrapment at 35 Mickey Hager MHP Drive in Stony Point.


Multiple fire departments were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, the first responding engine company encountered heavy fire conditions throughout the entire structure. Bystanders at the scene informed firefighters that a person was still inside the residence.


Firefighters entered the home and located a female victim in a bedroom. She was removed from the structure, and life-saving measures were immediately initiated. Despite those efforts, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.


The victim has been identified as Sandra Kay Ball Duke, 64, of Stony Point.


Agencies responding to and assisting at the scene included the Stony Point Fire Department, Hiddenite Fire Department, Taylorsville Fire Department, Wittenburg Fire Department, Vashti Fire Department, Alexander County EMS, and Alexander County Emergency Management.


The investigation into the cause of the fire and the woman’s death remains ongoing. The case is being jointly investigated by the Alexander County Fire Marshal’s Office, Alexander County Sheriff’s Office, North Carolina State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.


Officials have not yet released information regarding the cause of the fire.
