Residents across Iredell County are experiencing unsettled weather Monday as a strong storm system moves through the region, bringing rain, gusty winds, and the potential for severe thunderstorms.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for parts of western and central North Carolina, including Iredell County, as storms moved across the area during the morning hours. Forecasters warn that some storms could produce damaging wind gusts and heavy rain before conditions begin to improve later in the day.
According to the National Weather Service, today’s forecast calls for showers and possible thunderstorms with breezy conditions, with southwest winds between 15 and 20 miles per hour and gusts up to 35 mph. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-60s before gradually falling into the upper 50s later in the afternoon as the cold front passes through the area.
Rain chances remain high through much of the day, with forecasters estimating about a 90 percent chance of precipitation. Patchy fog and periods of heavier rain could also reduce visibility at times for drivers across the county.
The weather will change quickly tonight as the storm system moves out of the region. Skies are expected to gradually clear overnight, but temperatures will drop sharply with lows falling into the mid-20s and winds continuing to gust into the evening.
Looking ahead, much cooler air will settle into the area Tuesday with sunny skies and highs only in the mid-40s, followed by a gradual warming trend later in the week. By the weekend, temperatures could climb back into the 70s across the western Piedmont, bringing a taste of spring back to the region.
Authorities encourage residents to stay weather-aware throughout the day and monitor updates as storms continue moving through the area.
