Taylorsville, N.C. – A student tip about a possible weapon prompted a swift law enforcement response and led to the discovery of a firearm at a school event in Alexander County.

According to the Taylorsville Police Department, the incident unfolded Wednesday, April 1, when a North Iredell High School student traveled to a track and field meet at Alexander Central High School. Acting on a tip, officers met the student upon arrival and located a firearm inside the student’s vehicle. Authorities confirmed the weapon was never removed from the car and no students were ever in immediate danger.

The student was taken into custody and transported to a juvenile detention facility.

Officials say the situation came to light after students used the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System to flag a potential concern. The tip was relayed by the School Resource Officer at Alexander Central High School, allowing police to respond quickly.

Both Alexander County Schools and Iredell-Statesville Schools credited the reporting students and law enforcement for preventing a potentially dangerous situation.

School leaders emphasized that bringing a weapon onto school grounds is strictly prohibited and will not be tolerated. Alexander County Schools reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment, while Iredell-Statesville Schools stated that all appropriate disciplinary policies will be enforced.

Superintendent Dr. Bill Griffin praised the effectiveness of the anonymous tip system and the rapid coordination between students, school officials, and law enforcement.

Authorities continue to encourage students and community members to report suspicious activity, stressing that early reporting plays a key role in keeping schools safe.
