Tax Refund Text Scam Targets Carolinas

A new tax scam is making the rounds, targeting unsuspecting taxpayers with text messages claiming their refund is at risk.

Criminals are sending messages that appear official, telling recipients their tax refund has been processed and approved—but there’s a catch. The message urges them to provide bank account information through a link to receive their money. If clicked, that link can give scammers access to personal and financial information, allowing them to drain bank accounts.

Many of the texts are designed to look legitimate, often including language like: "Your refund request has been processed and approved. Please provide accurate payment information by September 16, 2025."

They also create a sense of urgency, warning: "Failure to submit the required payment information by September 16, 2025, will result in permanent forfeiture of this refund..."

In some cases, scammers switch tactics, claiming the recipient has won a grant instead of a refund.

Reports indicate the scam has already impacted taxpayers in nearby states like Virginia, raising concerns it could soon spread further into North Carolina.

Officials with the North Carolina Department of Revenue say they do not contact taxpayers about refunds via text message. Anyone who receives such a message should delete it immediately and avoid clicking any links.

If you’re unsure about a message claiming to be from the state, you’re encouraged to contact the department directly at 1-877-252-3052 during normal business hours.

Authorities say staying cautious and verifying communications can help stop these scams before they cause financial damage.
