Two men are facing charges after deputies conducting a license checkpoint in Cooleemee discovered multiple violations, including drug paraphernalia and alcohol-related offenses.

According to the Davie County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened on April 11 at approximately 3 p.m. at the intersection of Gladstone Road and Flat Rock Road. Deputies said a white 2001 Ford pickup truck approached the checkpoint and officers made contact with the driver, 18-year-old Jonary Josue Benitez Argueta of Cooleemee, and passenger 22-year-old Estiben Yasir Diaz-Reyes of Mocksville.

Investigators determined that Argueta did not have a valid North Carolina driver’s license and was not licensed in any other state. Deputies also found the truck’s license plate had a revoked status with an active pickup order, and the driver was unable to provide proof of insurance.

During the investigation, deputies observed an open bottle of Corona beer in the center cup holder and found a clear plastic bag containing white powder residue near the center console.

Argueta was arrested and charged with no operator’s license, possession of a revoked tag, displaying a revoked tag, possession of drug paraphernalia, no liability insurance, open container, and possession of a malt beverage by a person under 21.

Diaz-Reyes was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia and open container.

Both men are scheduled to appear in Davie County District Court on September 4.
