STATESVILLE, N.C. — The Salvation Army of Iredell County, along with its board of directors and a group of dedicated volunteers, opened a 24-hour emergency warming shelter in Statesville over the weekend to help keep unhoused and vulnerable residents safe during the recent winter storm.
As dangerously cold conditions continue, Salvation Army officials announced Tuesday that the shelter will remain open for an additional five days, extending operations through Sunday. The decision was made by Lt. April McCormick in coordination with the Salvation Army’s board of directors due to ongoing polar temperatures and continued community need.
With the extended operation, staff and volunteers are working to meet increased demands for meals, supplies, and basic necessities.
The Salvation Army says it is currently in need of several donated items, including pillows, blankets, snacks, breakfast and protein bars, breakfast meats, cereal, sliced bread (white and whole wheat), deli meats, cheese slices, gallons of tea and lemonade, flavored drink mix packets, cookies, brownies or other grab-and-go desserts, saltine crackers, and sturdy large paper bowls for soups.
Donations may be delivered in person or sent via delivery services to the Salvation Army at 1361 Caldwell Street in Statesville between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Officials say the extended shelter effort highlights the importance of community support during prolonged winter weather events. Those seeking additional information or looking to help are encouraged to contact the Salvation Army of Iredell County at 704-872-5623 during regular business hours.
