Joseph Jenkins made his arrival on January 1 at 9:49 p.m., becoming the first baby born at the hospital in the new year. The baby boy weighed seven pounds, thirteen ounces at birth.

Parents Shelbie Browne and Craig Jenkins said they were surprised to learn their son was the first baby of 2026 delivered at The Birth Place.

“I was shocked that we had the first baby because it was so late in the evening,” Browne said.

Baby Jenkins was not due until January 13, making his early arrival an unexpected and joyful way to ring in the new year.

To mark the occasion, the new family received a variety of gifts, including a gift certificate from Little Pigs Barbecue, a floral bouquet from Brookdale Flowers and Gifts, and a decorated cake from Ingles Market on Sullivan Road. Additional gifts included baby care products, blankets, a stuffed animal, diapers, wipes, and a $50 VISA gift card, all provided by community members and The Birth Place staff.

Pam Speight, The Birth Place program nurse, said the moment was especially meaningful for staff.

“We are blessed to be part of one of the most special times in the lives of our families on The Birth Place,” Speight said.

The family is now looking forward to bringing baby Joseph home, where he will meet his older siblings and begin his first year surrounded by loved ones.
